Cutting for Stone (Vintage) by Abraham Verghese
Cutting for Stone (Vintage)

amybug, August 6, 2012

I keep recommending this book, so thought I should do so here too. There are few stories that capture you so deeply that it feels like not only are you entering into the story, but that it is become a part of your story. Cutting for Stone is that kind of book. The main characters, so well developed and imperfect--as they should be--, also include the locales of Ethiopia and, later, New York City. Even India makes an appearance. But it's not just foreignness, but also it's opposite, intimacy, that makes these places and people so captivating. This is also true of the author's treatment of surgeons and their craft. I found myself in awe of the new world I was entering, and yet so at home. What a triumph!
