Concerning the excerpt: the whimsy level is dangerously high, the pacing is seriously off, but I like the brown apple (like an old laugh) metaphor. For every winning brown apple moment, however, there seems to be at least one lazy (eyes behind thick glasses like tropical fish) throw-away. Admittedly, finding something snarkily fresh or illuminating to say on the topic of either orphans or nuns (or orphans and nuns) isn't easy. Maybe the other stories are stronger.
