Geraldine Brooks must have an amazing staff of researchers. Her new book joins Year of Wonders and People of the Book as a solid, interesting, educational page-turner. The language is especially interesting as she includes quaint and sometimes puzzling vocabulary from 17th century New England. I could have done without the romance, but I guess that's required these days.
As much as I loved Three Cups of Tea, I like Mortenson's second book even more. Stones Into Schools shows his growth from footloose mountaineer to the director of an international NGO. His love and respect for the Pakistani and Afghan people are apparent here. This is a must-read for foreign aid skeptics and true believers.
Amy Tan never disappoints! Here she takes a wry look at naive Americans, truly innocents (or not so much) abroad, and the trouble they can get into and get others into, by putting their own interpretation on actions that they don't understand. Lots of fun, but also poignant.
Powell's City of Books is an independent bookstore in Portland, Oregon, that fills a whole city block with more than a million new, used, and out of print books. Shop those shelves — plus literally millions more books, DVDs, and eBooks — here at Powells.com.
