Voyaging on a Small Income by Annie Hill
Voyaging on a Small Income

auntiehallie, September 7, 2006

Annie Hill is a brilliant, highly successful capitalist who patiently explains, step by step, how she and her husband Pete have thrashed out a life voyaging in a 34 foot hard-chine cruiser built of their own hands - on shockingly little money. I don't think I'm giving away too much to say that she's made the choices necessary to live the way she does by exercising a sort of conservationist parsimony.

Their sailboat, Badger, designed by Jay Benford, is brilliantly sorted out to supply exactly their needs and little more. By choosing very, very carefully what to spend their money on - and by doing so, what they will spend their lives doing (voyaging rather than working at day jobs) they make a very tantalizing case for abandoning the consumer-slave lifestyle we're sold every day by those who seek to profit from us. This book is both a deeply radical work and a quietly practical guide to how a person (or couple) can find those not-so-well-trodden paths that lead to a truly satisfying life and not merely the promise of a retirement too far in the future. She has my admiration.
