The Barbarian Nurseries by Hector Tobar
The Barbarian Nurseries

barbara sepenuk, January 1, 2012

Barbarian Nurseries takes an unusual slant on the undocumented Central American women who care for the homes and children of U.S. citizens. The author, a male, tells the story, mostly in the voice of one of these women, creating a beautifully articulate, angry, enterprising character to lead us all over Los Angeles in search of the grandfather of the two small boys in her charge. Prejudice is explored from many points of view, as is the role of the media as it affects the actions of the various protagonists.

Engagingly and beautifully written, this is a book that, for better or worse, will always be relevant. Barbara Sepenuk, 1/1/12
