Sammy Keyes and the Runaway Elf (Sammy Keyes) by Wendelin Van Draanen
Sammy Keyes and the Runaway Elf (Sammy Keyes)

bibliojock, January 13, 2007

Sammy is a very modern, very cool Nancy Drew. Nancy lived with her attorney father and housekeeper Hannah. Sammy lives with her Grams in a seniors-only apartment (and has to sneak in and out to avoid nosy neighbors) while her mother pursues an acting career. Some acting career - her mother has dumped her to do embarrassing commercials for Gas-a-Way. Young teens and pre-teens will find Sammy's resourcefulness and ability to get in and out of trouble drolly satisfying. Narrated in first person by Sammy, Van Draanen's pacing and "teen-speak" are right on the money. The Runaway Elf is the best I've read in this incredible series.

Cold Companionable Streams: Poems by Louis Daniel Brodsky
Cold Companionable Streams: Poems

bibliojock, January 7, 2007

Space flight in the 1950s was just in its beginning stages. So when Williams and Abrashkin wrote Danny Dunn and the Anti-Gravity Paint, it was a real stretch of the imagination. Now, shuttle launches almost seem routine so old-fashioned science fiction doesn't seem like it would still hold appeal. But it does. Red-headed and impetuous, Danny Dunn and his side-kick Joe manage to get entangled in a new experiment with very adventurous results. Danny's father is dead (children in 50s literature didn't have divorced parents!) and his mother keeps house for an imminent scientist. No matter the time period, when properly written, two boys in outer space makes for an entertaining story. For a good bout with nostalgia, read it to yourself. For a good introduction to science fiction and adventure, read it to your kid.
