Not totally tragic but not especially enthalling either.
One of the problems with parody is you have already surrendered the moral high ground of originality so poor old Gideon is straight away thrown into the (frankly hackneyed) world of the pirate yarn.
What you're left with is really Pirates of the Caribbean meet Captains Pugwash and Feathersword on board the science ship Beagle having an adventure with broad plotting by HG Wells and Lemony Snickett, scripted by The Goodies trying to channel Monty Python.
So it's all as refreshing of a late Oasis album.
Post-modernism is all very well but I can't help feel this book is the result of a post dinner (or drinks anyway!) session that probably sounded much funnier after a few hearty rum and cokes than it seems reading on the commute to work.
