The Story of Edgar Sawtelle by David Wroblewski
The Story of Edgar Sawtelle

brontyman, September 11, 2008

This is a well written, well crafted book. The author seduces you with his wonderful prose, but ultimately the ending, that lacks dramatic truth, is unstaisfying and brings the reader to ruin. The author wants to drag the reader to his view of how this should all end, but it is not consistent with the characters actions or how we the reader come to know the characters. We do not require endings that make us happy but we want endings that make sense to us in the context of the story. For this reason, the book fails, and for myself, it was an empty and hollow experience.

The Art of Racing in the Rain by Garth Stein
The Art of Racing in the Rain

brontyman, September 11, 2008

Please read this book...This is not about what you may think it is. It may appear on the surface to be about auto racing and a dog who desires to become a man. For me, it really is about the journey we call life observed through the eyes of Enzo the family dog. He is special in his wisdom and understanding of love, loyality, and strength in the face of adversity.
It is a novel about you and me. We, the everyday heros that shoulder their burdens, take the pain, blink back the tears, and hope, that the Greeks were right, but fear they were wrong, that pain indeed brings wisdom.
It is a magical book with that power to move and transform your view of the world. It is a book with a soul.
