I'll Walk Alone by Mary Higgins Clark
I'll Walk Alone

caliente-si, January 30, 2012

I'll Walk Alone tosses the heroine, Zan, back and forth from one emotional and psychological peak or valley to the next with such speed, it literally takes your breath away. Writer, Mary Higgins Clark takes us on a roller-coaster ride with danger and frustration at every turn. The "set-up" with the likely villain is perfectly timed, so the conclusion is an amazing one. Stolen identity, stolen child, stolen safety and stolen sanity all work into the fabric of this tale.

Flights from the Lowlands by Florence Morris Rose
Flights from the Lowlands

caliente-si, January 30, 2012

This book by Florence Rose, 1891 to 1964, Flights from the Lowlands, is in its third edition and first hardcover from Trafford Publishing. First printed in 1935, the words are from another economically lean time, yet may speak to readers today. Ancient Greece, the American Revolution, her own post-Civil War contemporaries, as well as neighbors and family, inspired her writing. A suffragist who wrote to persuade passage of votes for women, her insights on current topics were often published. While her only post-secondary education was a “normal school,” WPA classes, a public library card, and later a correspondence writing course, it was an excellent education. An example of the feminist perspective this extraordinary writer found nearly a century ago is in
Hostage To a Return:

Your eyes have seen far places,
And I who stay at home
Read well their flashing challenge
To take the road and roam,
See blue lagoons of Venice,
The road to Mandalay,
Moonlight in Persian gardens,
And magic, far Cathay.
These tear my heart to ribbons,
But, oh, my very dear,
Since go you must, I’m staying;
For home, our home, is here.

The book back cover photo of the author, Florence Rose, a young teacher and newlywed, was taken in 1910. Florence Rose may still be finding new minds to stir in 2012.
