The Talented Miss Highsmith: The Secret Life and Serious Art of Patricia Highsmith by Joan Schenkar
The Talented Miss Highsmith: The Secret Life and Serious Art of Patricia Highsmith

cathleenecasey, April 10, 2010

Patricia Highsmith, a woman's woman, is absolutely fascinating! From her early writing for boys' comics to her famous Ripleys' series, she never disappoints. And Schenkar is certainly a match for her. Schenkar delves deeply into Highsmith's darkness, women, faith and how she writes. Be prepared to look up a couple of words per page.

Naming Nature: The Clash Between Instinct and Science by Carol Kaesuk Yoon
Naming Nature: The Clash Between Instinct and Science

cathleenecasey, January 29, 2010

Like Kingdom >Phylum >Class >Order >Family >Genus >Species? Want to go beyond Linnaeus? Yoon switches back and forth between scientist and laywoman to expose the amazing world of living things and how they came to be classified, then that system challenged. She will restore your curiosity: you will find yourself sorting out bird calls, noticing red ants in your kitchen and wanting to know what kind of woodpecker is working on your roof.

The Sound of Butterflies by Rachael King
The Sound of Butterflies

cathleenecasey, January 16, 2010

Slow as a lepidoptera in a tropical rainstorm, this archaic novel belongs in the romance novel category. It is so tedious, so plodding. The simple plot device, dragging out the reason for her husband's strange behavior including muteness until nearly the end, reminded me of certain grade school novels because the reason is so obvious by the 3rd day of his Amazon trip. All the characters are one-dimensional, some almost cartoonish. There is nothing to even learn; I had hoped to at least become more knowledgeable about butterflies. Days of Our Lives meets the Amazon jungle.
