The Little Bookstore of Big Stone Gap: A Memoir of Friendship, Community, and the Uncommon Pleasure of a Good Book

cerulean, September 13, 2013

Wendy Welsh and husband Jack Beck follow their dream and open a used bookstore in a small Appalachian coal town. Some of their challenges include both a lack of experience and of funds, as well as a depressed local economy and the rising popularity of e-books. With much hard work and perseverance they not only make a success of their store, but also become an indispensable part of the community. Anyone who loves bookstores will want to read this book.

This is a fascinating account of the experiences and adventures that an English family had while living for a year in Iceland. I didn't know much about Iceland before I read this book; now I want to visit the country myself!

Birdology: Adventures with a Pack of Hens, a Peck of Pigeons, Cantankerous Crows, Fierce Falcons, Hip Hop Parrots, Baby Hummingbirds, and One Murderously Big Living Dinosaur by Sy Montgomery
Birdology: Adventures with a Pack of Hens, a Peck of Pigeons, Cantankerous Crows, Fierce Falcons, Hip Hop Parrots, Baby Hummingbirds, and One Murderously Big Living Dinosaur

cerulean, February 3, 2011

This book is a must read for bird lovers. Sy Montgomery both entertains and educates us about our feathered friends. Her account of her experiences with seven different species of birds held me spellbound. The chapter about the baby hummingbirds being raised by volunteers who literally put their lives on hold to perform this service is awe inspiring. How do you raise something as tiny as a baby hummingbird? Read the book and find out.
