Healing the Child Warrior: A Search for Inner Peace

chawkey, March 29, 2011

A story not to be forgotten… This book captures what it was really like for the men captured in WWII. A story many POWs will never tell. The heartbreaking reality is described in wrenching detail and pulls you into the Stalag. No detail is left unsaid; no poshness was added to lighten the feelings of desperation each man felt. A true picture of a Stalag where the Red Cross had no idea how many American men were there. Trading with the French for cigarettes. Sharing old, holey blankets in bunks filled with lice, 3 men to a bunk to share warmth. The situations that "Hart's War" took so casually and lightly.

Eat, Pray, Love: One Woman's Search for Everything across Italy, India and Indonesia by Elizabeth Gilbert
Eat, Pray, Love: One Woman's Search for Everything across Italy, India and Indonesia

chawkey, February 9, 2011

I had a very hard time reading this book. I got frustrated with Gilbert’s “panic attacks” and whiney nature. Prior to Italy the worse whining ever, but once she got to India and her ashram, the whining decreased… Her characters are unbelievable and unrelatable. It’s hard to feel her point and become either sympathetic or involved with her. I would recommend this book if you are flying across country and need a distraction during your travels.

Son of a Witch (Wicked Years #2) by Gregory Maguire
Son of a Witch (Wicked Years #2)

chawkey, February 9, 2011

Son of a Witch was not quite as good as Wicked, but the story does pick up and delve more into Liir and what happens after Elphaba dies. I enjoyed reading Liir’s story, but wish there had been more resolution with Nor and her family… Good book, great to read while travelling or just sitting at home on a cold winter’s day. I recommend for all readers.
