This book lies somewhere between excellent scholarly research on modern popular culture and pure fun. Sepia tones and slightly antiquated language give the narrative a sense of authentic age; while the modernist structure of the book, covering the various aspects of the title song, from Mississippi John Hurt to Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds allows for it to be viewed as a proper textbook as well. The care given to African American popular culture in this respect, paralleled only by Ho Che Anderson?s King and Kyle Baker?s Nat Turner in the medium of the graphic novel, sets a new high mark researchers and entertainers should be aspiring to. For those that like their comics with some brains, this is the book for you.
