It is difficult to create a book with a real message about morals without sounding preachy or sappy. This book really hits the mark. It is an incredible view of the life of the hired help in the South at a time when prejudice was written into the laws of the state. Highly recommend!!
Such a great book but so hard to describe. It's a story about a child prodigy who never quite made it as an adult, about being on a jury, about Buddhist teachings, about romance, about parenting an extraordinary child. My husband and I both loved it and we rarely even read the same books, never mind like the same books.
This book really surprised me with the ending. I always enjoy Chris Bohjalian's work because he is such a good storyteller. And here he lures us in with a tale of a woman who was attacked and now works at a homeless shelter. As a part-time photographer, she is given the task of archiving the photos of a former homeless man who died. Besides recognizing the artistry in the photos, she sees some links to aspects of her own life. To reveal more would be unfair, but I will say that the last chapters definitely kept me reading deep into the night.
