Twelve Steps to a Compassionate Life
Twelve Steps to a Compassionate Life

cocacy, January 2, 2012

Karen Armstrong's work couldn't be more timely. A well crafted book, Armstrong unveils a 12 point system whereby readers can begin prioritizing and implementing compassion and compassionate works into their daily lives. Armstrong is clear in that this won't happen overnight but is a constant, life long process that, when exercised by communities, can reverberate across nations. The foundation of her 12 point system lies with The Golden Rule -- Do unto to others as you should like to have done unto you -- a version of which can be found in most major world religions. Armstrong's book is not rooted heavily in any particular religion, rather it takes inspiration from a number of them, most prominently Christianity, Judaism, Islam, Buddhism, and Confucianism. I highly recommend this work because it is not only well-written but clearly issues a call to action with practical ways that each of us can become just a bit more compassionate. This is easily one of the best books that I read in 2011!
