The Hour of the Star by Clarice Lispector
The Hour of the Star

Light but profound, whimsical yet existential, this 86-page novel is thoroughly engaging and powerful. The author's commentary is ever-present but not intrusive and is in fact integral to the work, in some ways Holden Caulfield-like. Simple tale of a poor, clueless, empty-headed country girl in the big city (Rio). Lovely.
