I won't be giving away the ending to this book as I am not finished with it yet (a couple of chapters to go). I found it very well written and the characters sharply defined. The girls and their interactions rang true as I have two daughters of my own with about the same age differences. The awkwardness of the relations with the previous spouses were also drawn very realistically. All in all I would recommend this book to others and intend to read the author's other works very soon.
?The Ha Ha? ? the title sounds dumb but it is about a Vietnam Vet that got severely injured on his first 16 days in Vietnam and eventually inherits his parent?s home, never regains the power of speech and lives with three roommates (2 painters and a Vietnamese girl- raised in Texas [platonic]), works for nuns doing landscaping. His high school girlfriend who is an alcoholic checks herself into rehab and drops off her 9 y.o. biracial son (not his) for him to take care of while she?s getting sober. Really well written and the characters are very believable.

I read this book because I have two Latina daughters (I am caucasian). I read 50 pages at the first night and could not put it down. I highly recommend it, especially as an insight into the exodus from Mexico & what drives the Mexican people to try and enter the US again and again in their search for a better life.

I enjoyed this book with it's references to areas in the Northwest that I am acquainted with (i.e., Port Angeles; Lewiston-Clarkston, Moscow) as well as the descriptions of dealing with a loved one in the early and late stages of Alzheimer's.
I felt a real empathy with the author and her life struggles as a woman, mother & niece to an ailing aunt.
I recommend this book and will be passing it on to my friends.

I fell in love with this set of books when I saw it on display - I am saving my pennies up to buy it. My two most favorite artists together!(2 of 3 readers found this comment helpful)
