The Slaves' War: The Civil War in the Words of Former Slaves by Andrew Ward
The Slaves' War: The Civil War in the Words of Former Slaves

djpearlman, July 16, 2008

This is an invaluable addition to the literature of the African-Amercan experience. Bringing together for the first time the personal accounts of slaves involved in the Civil War, it brings forward all the joy, pain, confusion, fears and hopes that went with emancipation and the "freedom" to do ... what? The complexity of personal experience with world changing events is at the heart of this book, which is a must read for anyone interested in the history of this country, which should, of course, be everone.
