The "role of dissenter" appealed to O'Connor? Why did she refuse to let James Baldwin visit her at Andalusia because she didn't want to upset the neighbors?

The Mind-Body Problem (Contemporary American Fiction) by Rebecca Goldstein
The Mind-Body Problem (Contemporary American Fiction)

The details, texture, and erudition were fantastic, but why set women's liberation back five thousand years? Hello? The narrator could have been a 40's or 50's character. She was totally unlikeable in her adoration of a MAN, her sycophancy, and her bid for fame thru her genius husband, who himself was rude and spoiled, and quite childish. I would like to know how much this book actually sold.
