Reproductive Politics: What Everyone Needs to Know (What Everyone Needs to Know) by Rickie Solinger
Reproductive Politics: What Everyone Needs to Know (What Everyone Needs to Know)

dmf, July 23, 2013

I recently read Solinger's "Pregnancy and Power" and was particularly pleased at how she transformed the usual narrow view on reproductive rights to a broader reproductive justice perspective. For example, women's right to choose when NOT to have children is more meaningful when contrasted with women who have been denied the right to have children. I particularly appreciated her analysis of the appropriation of African-American women's bodies for reproductive purposes; she addressed the conflicting feelings resulting from a cultural legacy of both being forced to have children and being denied that right.

I am very much looking forward to reading Reproductive Politics!
