The Buddha reminds us that there is "no self" (anatman). Therefore, who is addicted? A difficult part of 12-Step for me is the requirement to surrender to a higher power. The Buddha would say that a true understanding of the nature of reality would lead us to conclude that we are our own higher power and that the nature of our being is emptiness. The Dhammapada teaches: "There is no separate self to suffer. The one who understands this is free. This is the path of clarity"
