Kiss the Dead (Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter) by Laurell K Hamilton
Kiss the Dead (Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter)

dorranqueen, January 30, 2013

Even this far into the series, Anita Blake is still the best monster-killer in the book world. In this outing, Laurel K. Hamilton focused more on the mystery and less on the personal interactions among Anita and her band of merry men. The writing is fast-paced and the drama is intense. If you've never read Hamilton, start with her "Circus of the Damned," but start reading her - fast. Her next book will be out in July 2013 and you won't want to miss it!

Cold Days: A Novel of the Dresden Files (Dresden Files) by Jim Butcher
Cold Days: A Novel of the Dresden Files (Dresden Files)

dorranqueen, January 9, 2013

Jim Butcher just keeps getting better and better - especially at twisting up the life of his primary character, Harry Dresden. Having just recovered from being a ghost and the special "recovery" assassination attempts from Mab, Harry gets his first assignment as the Winter Knight - kill one of the deathless fae. How he manages the political twists of the Winter Court and revealing his resurrection to his friends and family makes up the bulk of the book. The ending was totally unexpected to me, although in looking back over the last two books, it made perfect sense, but again completely complicated Harry's world. And is Harry doomed never to get together with Karrin - seems totally unfair to me, but Harry has come to expect that anyone he loves can be used as a hostage against him (although Karrin is perfectly capable of taking care of herself). I can't wait until the next year for the next book - this is one of my favorite series and authors!

One Salt Sea (October Daye Novels) by Seanan Mcguire
One Salt Sea (October Daye Novels)

dorranqueen, January 9, 2013

Toby Daye is not your average fae - she's responsible to her Duke and the Lady of the Mists to handle problems in the realm. The kidnapping of two boys from Under the Sea threatens war between the realms, and it's up to Toby to find the boys - within a three-day deadline. Toby's transformation in order to visit under the sea is a unique twist and the resulting kidnapper makes sense if you've read the prior books. Altogether, these books are great and offer unusual takes on "fairies" and the "fairy world." More than anything, I love the relationship between Toby and the King of the Cats - that relationship is one fraught with tension and desire perfectly balanced. I'd like to see more of it in future books!
