The Devil All the Time by Donald Ray Pollock
The Devil All the Time

elsimpso, January 6, 2012

This book was absolutely stunning. Mr. Pollock often constructs sentences powerful as the grittiest Cormac McCarthy, and deals in characters with a grotesque richness reminiscent of Flannery O'Connor. The book is a slow burn: the longer one reads in a single session, the more intense the experience becomes until it reaches the point of being unbearable. This book is best tackled in daily short spurts, which is great for relishing his use of language, and prolongs the time we get to spend on the fringes of Knockemstiff.
