Leni Zumas's writing crackles. Her books are sharp, bleak, funny, and possibly dangerous. When her collection of short stories, Farewell Navigator,...

Who need a linear narrative in 2011? Jennifer Egan takes the reader time-tripping into a multitude of key moments that are shared among a varied set of characters. Readers -- voyeuristically --can watch the drama unfold with sometimes little introduction and yet partake of the central theme of the novel-- which I think is the omnipotence of time.
This is an exciting episode in Civil war history with a slightly exagerrated title. As a Northerner I have had little exposure to Jefferson Davis so I gained a very new perspective on his leadership even during the declining weeks of the Civil war. The contrast between Davis' flight south and the activities leading to Lincoln's death and funeral train create a polarized image of American people during a fragile time
Octavia works her magic on this series of novellas thath string together a vision of humans with altered abilities who feel drawn to seek a separate destiny for themselves and often lead/enslave followers in their wake.
This is the book to read if you enjoyed any part of her earlier Doomsday book where a time traveling historian attempted to research the Dark ages with almost deadly consequences... Blackout is more accomplished and deeply researched story which follows 3 historians as they travel back to the 1940's in search of 3 different experiences connected with WW2. Not surprizingly things do not go smoothly and the reader is treated the juicy details of life in London during the bombings, volunteer efforts during Dunkirk; truly a total immersion in the time period. The ending is a true cliff-hanger and you will likely want to buy/borrow "All Clear" to get to the end of the story!
I found this story to be such a good read I gave it to a best friend to read and now I have to buy another copy as her husband read it, loved it and had to lend it out. Just a great, original adventure/buddy story that you will remember. I found it to be very cinematic as well--but in a positive way.
