Very entertaining read! My 2-year-old daughter likes making her own marching bands too, and found this story very engrossing. Lots of nice details of family life, and fun fireworks for great parent-added sound effects. The illustrations tell a lot of the subtle aspects of the story, allowing for lots of interaction. My only complaint is a strange interlude in which Olivia goes hog wild with her mother's lipstick. Although personally I found the illustrations for that part of the story absolutely fantastically hilarious, my daughter now puts on chapstick for ten minutes straight. A much-requested story at our house! Just hide the makeup and brace yourself for your own household marching band.

This is a great book for bedtime or any other time! My 2-year-old has learned lots of words and animals from this book (kinkajou, sloth, gecko, boa snake), she loves the illustrations, rhymes, and repetitions, and it helps her go off to bed without a fuss. It is also fun to read, since the rhymes are unusual and playful.

This book is probably best for the upper end of the recommended age range, who might find the pigeon's naughtiness funny, as his antics simply gave my 2-year-old a crash course in how to delay bedtime. And heaven knows no toddler needs more excuses to delay bedtime than they already devise on their own. Willems' stories strike me as suited more for adults to reminisce on the humorous quirks of children, than for the children themselves (sort of like "Childhood is Hell" by Matt Groening).
