A Forest of Kings: The Untold Story of the Ancient Maya by Linda Schele
A Forest of Kings: The Untold Story of the Ancient Maya

firuli, January 5, 2010

I have been teaching Pre-hispanic American History for more than a decade. This is the first time thanks to this book than I am learning the political strategies and life of the cities of the Petén region during the Maya Classic Period. The book shows in a very clear way how the ideology of Venus as the evening and morning Star was crucial in the developments of the Wars of conquest in the Maya realm. Also explains how new strategies of War, probably coming from Teotihuacan, and the use of new weapons like the atlatl, changed the nature of forging the new powerful States that emerge during the Classic Period. The political alliances, the extension of dynasties, the hegemonic period of different city states, v.gr. Tikal, Caracol, Naranjo, Palenque are for the first time explained. This is a book you read and reread. I wonder if it has been translated in Spanish, because is a must to be read for central americans in order to introduce this extraordinary part of our Ancient History. Juan Carlos Solórzano
