Sophie's Choice by William Styron
Sophie's Choice

frigaaasgard, November 8, 2011

I just picked up a used copy of this at Powell's last week and re-read it and remembered why it's one of my favorite books of all time. It's not the movie about the holocaust, it's a book about a white guy from the south trying to be a writer in New York and surrounded by these brilliant unfolding stories. It's as much about the slavery in the south as the Nazis.

This book was banned when I was in high school. I'm not sure why. Styron is an amazing story teller. Maybe because it discusses that it was more than Jews that were the victims of Hitler. Who knows. But if all you know of this book is the movie, you should read the novel, it's so much more.
