National Audubon Society Field Guide to North American Rocks and Minerals (Audubon Society Field Guide) by National Audubon Society
National Audubon Society Field Guide to North American Rocks and Minerals (Audubon Society Field Guide)

funkinfurdro, July 23, 2010

Excellent field guide. Would recommend over others of it's kind for it's thoroughness, layout, and ease of access. There are many minerals covered in this book that you will find either glossed over or ignored in others. I've enjoyed it specifically for use in the field because it's content is relevant to a rock hound doing their hounding in the US. The North America specific information makes it far easier to identify the types of minerals that can be found in a given state. This aspect also has helped me significantly narrow down what it is I might be looking at in the field before I've had a chance to study it closely simply by letting me know about the commonalities and rarities in a given state, or part of a state.

The color coding system makes the book very easy to navigate when trying to determine where to begin identifying a mineral. This is my favorite part about this book. While I enjoy reading deeply detailed explanations and wells of information concerning rocks and minerals, in the field is not where I generally am trying to do so. This book is concise but doesnt spare the relevant details. The last rock and mineral field guide you'll need. Until they publish a new edition that is.
