I hate to put a damper on this book, as the information is very acceptable and the book is for the most part easily read. But, as I am reading, I detect a very strong undercurrent of someone who was basically disgruntled with her job. Ms. Powell makes every duty that she had, to be extrodinairly difficult It does not give (right or wrong) the warm feeling that Downton Abbey and/or Upstairs, Downstairs conveys.

What a wonderful Series of books by Alan Bradley. I just finished The Weed That Strings the Hangman's Bag, (#2). I have been so captivated, that I have not been able to put the book down!!! We needed a new and younger sleuth on the literary scene. These books will entrall young and old alike.
This is the first book in the series. I cannot say enough about this author. I was hooked before I left the the first paragraph. Absolutely a cross between James Herriott and Patrick Taylor. The writing is wonderful. I'm ready to pack my bags and leave for Yorkshire!

I am reading this book for the second time. I loaned my orginal copy out and it wasn't returned (this one I am keeping).
I have to say The Queen and I has GOT to be one of the funniest books I've (re) read in years. The Royal family is depicted in a bazaar, but strangly believable fashion. What fun, to see the Royal family squirm!
As always, the Queen Mum shows what "class" is all about.
I think anyone who has an interest in the Royal family would enjoy this book.
Delightful!

In true Alexander Mccall Smith's works, this 1st in series is just great. I am now involved in three of his series. All the characters are well defined, and easily believeable. Hats off to Alexander Mccall Smith!
