Anthony Bourdain's Les Halles Cookbook: Strategies, Recipes, and Techniques of Classic Bistro Cooking

Witty, sarcastic, profane...everything that makes Bourdain Bourdain. Full of great recipes, handy techniques and the stories that launched Bourdain's writing and television careers. A must-read for any Kitchen Confidential or No Reservations fan.

Ten Billion by Stephen Emmott
Ten Billion

gary w cannon, September 21, 2013

This might be the most TERRIFYING book about climate change, overpopulation and the impending environment horrors I have ever read.

Think 7 billion people is a strain on resources and the environment? Trying to feed 10 billion would basically deforest the entire planet and consume every drop of fresh water...and current population growth figures, if left unchecked, lead experts to believe the population could hit 28 billion by the year 2100!

Forget politics, forget political correctness, forget religious objections - if we don't take DRASTIC action NOW(!!) regarding overpopulation, carbon emissions, deforestation, water use, etc. I feel the conclusion of the author, Stephen Emmott, will inevitably be true: "We are f%$#^ed."

Never Cry Wolf by Farley Mowat
Never Cry Wolf

gary w cannon, August 31, 2013

A natural history classic.

Freshly out of school and newly hired by the Canadian Government - Mowat is tasked with conducting a wolf survey to demonstrate how they are devastating the caribou population...only he finds natives and trappers killing thousands of caribou while the wolves often live on small game; only culling the sick and weak from the dwindling caribou herds.

Great adventure in the far north and Mowat, as always, is hilarious.

The Way of the Knife: The CIA, a Secret Army, and a War at the Ends of the Earth

gary w cannon, August 16, 2013

An in-depth look at how the war on terrorism has fundamentally changed the CIA and Dept of Defense. Follow the changes from Cold War black ops of the 70's and 80's through current paramilitary strikes in "friendly" countries and use of deadly drones from the 'comfort' of the CIA parking lot.
