Glasshouse by Charles Stross

geekgirl, January 26, 2010

Glasshouse is one of the rare science fiction books that uses a futuristic civilization to look at gender relations in the present. It starts in a "post-gender" society (one where people can change bodies to become most any physical form), where the main character has just undergone a memory revision procedure. He soon joins an experiment that is supposed to recreate a sort of 1950s-style american suburb -- at least what the designers in the future think what the 50s was like. He is stuck in a female body, in a generic 1950s marriage and suburban household where the participants earn points for really getting into character. Of course, as the book unfolds, we find out that the experiment has a slightly sinister twist. This is one of my favorite books of all time!
