Gossamer Axe

goatmother51, January 23, 2013

How did I miss this book in the '80s when I was living my exciting youth? Never mind, a friend gave me this, among many other sci fi and fantasy fiction novels to read during my convalescence and I was transported back to my youth! Baudino weaves a spell around the reader as she draws you into the totally believable lives of a group a characters drawn into the orbit of a mysterious woman, whose ancient wisdom opens them to their own gifts and, of course, love. Ahhhhhh, where is this author now?

Dreams of Joy by Lisa See
Dreams of Joy

If you haven't read the author's previous book about the "Shanghai Girls" who become Joy's aunt and mother, no matter. Lisa See throws you quickly into the turmoil and secrets of this complex family, and you cannot help but follow Joy's journey to find her real father, and her true self, in the China of Mao's 'Great Leap Forward'. You don't have to be a history buff to appreciate the historical setting. The harsh realities of that time not so long ago fill you with real anxiety for the characters you come to care about so much. They have grown so real, in fact, that I think I'll go back in time now to visit China and Joy's parents in their youth.

His Dark Materials. Philip Pullman by Philip Pullman
His Dark Materials. Philip Pullman

I am the middle-aged mother of a teenager and have a masters degree. I read this book with my son and found it beautifully written, intellectually compelling in its concepts, and an all around exciting read. Head over heels above any other adventure/fantasy book aimed at young readers. I would highly recommend it for even the most sophisticated reader.
