The Long Walk: The True Story of a Trek to Freedom by Slavomir Rawicz
The Long Walk: The True Story of a Trek to Freedom

grammahotshot, August 4, 2012

Cherish freedom? I first read it over 50 years ago and I've read it again and again. There were prisoners of war taken during WWII - this man was one. Rawicz and the people who fled a prison in Russia with him were willing to endure unbelievable hardships just to have freedom. A carefully planned escape and then the risks of being caught are just the beginning of the story. Along the way they are joined by others. Not everyone survives their journey which includes crossing a desert and mountains. You will be moved to tears and filled with awe as you read this wonderful account of the human desire for freedom.

I remember winter evenings curled up by my daddy while he peeled apples for us while mom read to us. She was very selective about what she read and I remember this book well! Ralph Moody is a master at creating the scene and his description of things makes it seem like you're right there! I remember wishing that the book wouldn't end! You'll love the little boy and his mother and feel like you know them personally!
