Careless in Red: A Novel (Thomas Lynley and Barbara Havers Novels) by Elizabeth George
Careless in Red: A Novel (Thomas Lynley and Barbara Havers Novels)

hako, December 14, 2010

"Head to toe in black, but her lips were red. They were as red as a rose might be. They were as red as blood indeed was." ("Careless in Red", p.156)
I know that Elizabeth George can write, but not from reading this book. Her regretful tendency to turn series hero Lynley into mythical idol, here reaches new and embarassing heights (depths?) as she metaphorically compares him to Christ borne down by cross and thorns on his trek to crucifiction.

Frederica by Georgette Heyer
Frederica

hako, December 8, 2007

The many fans of Georgette Heyer's extend generations. She is a wonderful writer and celebrated historian. This book, like her others, is a "romance" in the same way that Austen's books are "romances".
"Frederica" is a great favorite; it shows Heyer's impressive skills with creating children and dogs, as well as a diverse and vivid set of characters. "Venetia" has to be described as the most romantic of her delightful novels, but "Frederica" is one of the most fun.
