The Goat in the Rug by Charles Blood
The Goat in the Rug

hhaworth, September 14, 2010

This book was a favorite of mine AND my mother loved it, too! The illustrations are so expressive and it's fun to pick out all the tiny details. I own the original 1976 hardback edition and I have now passed on the enjoyment to my two children. As a child, I not only got a kick out of all the mischief that Geraldine got into, but I also learned about all of the steps involved with rug weaving. My favorite part of the book is when Geraldine eats all of the plants Glenmae is going to use to dye the wool and she fears she will end up a multicolored goat because of it! This is a very fun book that sticks with you through the years. I highly recommend it. There are also many free lesson plans out on the web to go along with this book. The book can be used to teach about different cultures for younger kids, or economics for older children. After looking at all the lessons available, I realize I was learning a lot more than I thought I was!
