The Invention of the Jewish People by Shlomo Sand
The Invention of the Jewish People

hugh.curran, September 3, 2009

I have yet to read Shlomo Sand's book but look forward to reviewing it. The topic is of great interest since
mythic beginnings have always fascinated me. Ireland,
my homeland, has its own book of mythic beginnings but now with genetic and archaelogical studies revealing much older strata involving agricultural societies we now have the opportunity to write history in a more accurate way that is free of narrow nationalism.

In terms of Jewish history, another helpful book, for those who have not heard of it, is by Israel Finklestein & Neil Silberman called "The Bible Unearthed". This book helps us see history from an archaelogical rather than a Biblical perspective and is far more helpful in allowing us to divest ourselves of the emotional attachment to specific origins. Nations generally fabricate their histories to make it accord with the their own version and to justify their rule over indigenous peoples.
