The Party Is Over: How Republicans Went Crazy, Democrats Became Useless, and the Middle Class Got Shafted by Mike Lofgren
The Party Is Over: How Republicans Went Crazy, Democrats Became Useless, and the Middle Class Got Shafted

First off, the most compelling thing about this book is that the author is a Republican. Or was a Republican . . . I'm not sure he actually switched parities, but it is interesting to me that this is largely a book of self criticism. Not of the author himself, but of the political party that he spent a lifetime serving. Yes, there are SOME comments about the Democrats, but largely this is about Bat Shit Crazy Republicans! Being a Republican political insider, Mr. Lofgren had unique access to the inter workings of his Party. He is very revealing in exposing the actions of Newt Gringrich and laying at his feet much of what is now wrong with the American political process. I highly recommend this book and have been trying to get various members of my family, who support the Republican Party, to read this and understand that today's Republican Party is NOT the Party of my grandfather!! I think for anyone who hopes and prays for a return to sanity in the American political process, this book is a must read. To understand the present and hope for the future, we must first understand the past and the motives of the players in the process. It may be shocking for some to realize that the people they look to for patriotic leadership are the very people who have completely abandoned any real interest in being a patriot by embracing an ideology that is solely about winning, and little else.

Deer Hunting with Jesus: Dispatches from America's Class War by Joe Bageant
Deer Hunting with Jesus: Dispatches from America's Class War

This is a GREAT read! Any and every Democrat running for political office should pick this up and make it their bible for relating to the working class that they claim to represent. For anyone who has every asked the question, "but why do they vote against their own interests?" in relationship to the working poor's support for Republican candidates - this is a must read! I relate to the author and to his peeps - they are my peeps too, and I too have been frustrated with the way the Democratic Party relates to those it used to represent. If the Democrats are ever going to get back to representing the interests of the working poor they need to figure out how to relate to them first - and I think this book will greatly facilitate that process!! If nothing else, the author lays down a good understanding of how the Republican Party has managed to co-op a group that logic would suggest they couldn't possibly reach. Logic isn't at play here - and the author points out why.

Better Off without 'Em: A Northern Manifesto for Southern Secession by Chuck Thompson
Better Off without 'Em: A Northern Manifesto for Southern Secession

jamespdx, September 6, 2013

I loved this book! It is very funny, tho he makes some excellent points about how the South is both in competition with the rest of the country and also pulling us all in it's direction. For those Northern Liberals, like me, living in other parts of the country this book give pause. Mr. Thompson attempts to explain why the South has so much influence on today's political landscape and pretty much everything he comes across is reason for all of us to be concerned. While I doubt that it is either possible or practicable to severe ties with our Southern brothers and sisters, what the author accomplishes is presenting a pretty damn good reason why it might be desirable!
