Author Harry Connolly has created a unique world in the Urban Fantasy genre. Game of Cages is the second book in the Twenty palaces series, with Child of Fire being the first. The protagonist, Ray Lilly, is a ordinary man who does not have powerful magic or insider knowledge to assist him. He works with a powerful sorcerer who is only begrudgingly past killing him herself. He is the expendable part of the team. Ray survives with street smarts, one small spell he owns and a bit of luck. Game of Cages builds on Ray Lilly's world and lets the reader see the inner conflict of his actions, and mistakes. He is trying to develop a sense of ethics or code of conduct he can live with in this fight against summoned predators. I loved this book and look forward to the next one!
