Afterimage by Helen Humphreys
Afterimage

jeanie, March 5, 2009

Helen Humphrey's spare and dreamy writing transports the reader to another era, the Victorian period when photographer Julia Margaret Cameron left us a haunting legacy of her mournful and unforgetable black and whites. After reading Afterimage, the story of maid Annie Phelan living, working and modeling in Julia and Eldon's household, you'll be searching out Julia's photographs in books. I remain mesmerized by Cameron's artistic talent, and I can't help wondering about class and gender divisions that persist. Humphrey's evocative writing had me floating through my days: a perfect story to get lost in, one in which art and love transcend daily struggles.
