What is the What
What is the What

jmills, November 28, 2007

This one of the best and most compelling books I read last year; it demonstrates the sheer tenacity of the human race, which certainly has evolved to be perseverant. For such collective tragedy to befall one group of people and such personal tragedy to land firmly upon one individual is difficult to contemplate for those of us who experience relative lives of ease in the west. For the tragedy to continue and be amplified once the main character emigrates to our country is even more difficult to fathom. I am a surgeon by trade, but this book convinced me that some scars never heal. Yet the human organism goes on. The book made me feel simultaneously proud of and yet devastated by the human predicament.
