Cod: A Biography of the Fish That Changed the World by Mark Kurlansky
Cod: A Biography of the Fish That Changed the World

jmstraig, May 27, 2007

A fish-eye view of history, Cod charts over 500 years of human interaction with the humble Codfish. From the influence of Cod in American settlements to the effects of commercial fishing on Cod populations Mark Kurlansky's portrait of the Cod fish is complete, however, Cod is more than just a bizarre historical tale. The effects of humanity on the enviroment, and the danger that the long savored Cod fish could face in the future emerge in detail. Kurlansky's book is a readable, entertaining, and education experience and is well worth exploring.

The Debate on the Constitution by Bernard (edt) Bailyn

jmstraig, May 15, 2007

In two compact and well bound volumes, Bernrad Bailyn (a notable historian of the early American Republic) brings together a wide range of documents that shed light on the intense debate over the constitution. While the obvious documents, such as the Federalist Papers, are included, the organization and selection of works puts these documents in their broader context. The often glossed over Anti-Federalist side is given a treatment here that is rivaled only by Herbert Storing's 7 volume Complete Anti-Federalist. For their contribution to a clear understand of the compromises and controversies that the American Constitution was founded on, these volumes merit inclusion in even the smallest library of American history.
