Morgan’s Pasture is an amazingly accurate and touching portrayal of youth, maturity, family, and community that as an adult I found poignant, entertaining, and enlightening, though it would also be a great summer read for teens.
It is a modern day Stand By Me- a beautiful story that would resonate with anyone and intricately-drawn, unique characters that I saw so much of myself in.
There are so many things going on in it, so many themes it approaches, that it surprised me how easy a read it is. The main character, Will Border, is caught between friendships and is forced to make difficult decisions. One teen character has a developmental disorder, which is understated throughout but comes to a very real climax. The teens’ families have very different styles of parenting that are contrasted well. And underneath it all lies a subtle level of darkness- a corrupt small town cop, two potentially dangerous or potentially inspiring transients, and a series of events that lead to a chilling climax, from which we can all learn and grow.
