Vivian Maier: Street Photographer by Vivian Maier
Vivian Maier: Street Photographer

kendallishere, December 16, 2012

Vivian Maier is one of the greatest street photographers in American history. She walked around New York and Chicago in the 1950s, 60s, and 70s, taking pictures with her Rolleiflex of whatever her eyes fell in love with. The love is palpable: love for children, love for the odd or the lonely, respect for hard labor, admiration for the ways people dressed or played or performed themselves. Her composition is pure genius, and what makes her most remarkable to me is that she was completely unknown in her lifetime. As far as we know, nobody ever said yes to her work. Nobody bought it, exhibited it, or gave it prizes. Yet she was driven--and it can only be that it was a passion for her--to keep getting out and taking new pictures. She couldn't always afford to develop her film. She only had her own dark room for a short while. Usually she was taking care of other people's children. She left a record of the world she was driven to preserve, of the way she saw. It is phenomenal. There is no photographer on earth whose work I admire more.
