Life is So Good by George Dawson and Richard Glaubman
Life is So Good

kjoy, June 26, 2012

I have never read a book which illustrated so clearly that it's not our circumstances, but our attitudes, that matter in life. George Dawson remains inspirational even after his death, and his story is especially appropriate for young people.

Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry (Puffin Modern Classics) by Mildred D Taylor
Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry (Puffin Modern Classics)

kjoy, June 18, 2012

Like so many classics of children's literature, this is one of those books that should be read by everyone, and mature readers will want to continue with the two sequels which detail life in the Jim Crow South during the Depression, based on memories of the author's father. The page that shows the history of a school book that has been handed down to the colored school after years of wear and tear in a white school is eye-opening, and explains fastidious Little Man's " objections when he realized that his long-awaited "new book" isn't new.
