Most regretably, I finished Special Topics in Calamity Physics in two days. It's just that kind of book.
I bought this novel for its perceived cleverness, for its theatrical literary allusions, and for its gorgeously brainy, oddball heroine. What I got was the best suspense novel I've read since The Secret History by Donna Tartt. But unlike The Secret History and so many other great literary novels with potboiler plots, Special Topics's narrator, Blue Van Meer, actually reads like a heroine and not just a conduit for action.
I can't say enough good things about this novel! The elegance of Pessl's words never disappoint, and it's literally a page turner to the end. Buy it! Now! I MEAN IT!
