This is a fabulous book which combines detailed realism, some but not too much fantasy, a sublime love story, and a deep understanding of the human condition. Although I finished it several days ago I can't stop thinking about it, and I hope to continue to do so. It conveys an intensely physical sense of life in Portugal in the early 1700s as the central characters walk the earth, often barefooted, and for a few moments soar high above it.
