The Anti-Bride Guide: Tying the Knot Outside of the Box by Carolyn Gerin and Stephanie Rosenbaum
The Anti-Bride Guide: Tying the Knot Outside of the Box

labrys, August 13, 2011

If pastels induce nausea, this may be the guide for you. Practical advice and ideas outside the standard fare with amusing illustrations and helpful tips.

The Help by Kathryn Stockett
The Help

labrys, August 13, 2011

This meandering and self-congratulatory novel perpetuates the trope of benevolent white people "empowering" poor people of color. The civil rights movement was an uprising of African Americans where some whites helped; this fiction work may be a comforting idle but is far afield from how history unfolded. My interest had completely evaporated 50 pages in - only a ninth of the way through!

An Education
An Education

labrys, July 30, 2011

Delightful memoir, an early chapter of which served as the inspiration for the feature film, "An Education." This quick, charming read spans the arc of Ms Barber's life from early child hood to her husband's decline. Filled with glimpses of early days at Penthouse magazine as well as domestic life and highlights of her journalistic career, this book reads like a novel and is a fun way to spend a short afternoon.

The New York Regional Mormon Singles Halloween Dance: A Memoir by Elna Baker
The New York Regional Mormon Singles Halloween Dance: A Memoir

labrys, July 30, 2011

This memoir recounts the comic journey of Elna from devout Mormon moving to NYC to who she is today (don't want to spoil the ending...). From weight loss to romantic misadventures, it's a bumpy but hilarious ride. She's the only character that really develops in the book and there are a few inconsistencies (Astoria is NOT 5 blocks from the Bronx!) but fun summer fluff.

Intuition by Allegra Goodman
Intuition

an exquisite book that paints convincing characters - very reminicent of the grad students and academic dysfunction I know - with enough intrigue to keep you on your toes! a great read - certainly her best yet!
