Zeitoun (Vintage) by Dave Eggers
Zeitoun (Vintage)

lagniappe, January 19, 2011

Both uplifting and tragic, Zeitoun gets to the heart of one family's story during hurricane Katrina. I appreciated Eggers' apolitical story telling, holding to Zeitoun and Kathy's perspective. This read is both enraging and enlightening as it details events that weren't captured on TV during these days, making me realize any media images and reports were merely a gloss-over of the aftermath and truth of how people survived both the hurricane and government's response with enforcing martial law and withholding of rights. As Eggers (and Kathy and Zeitoun) acknowledges this is a singular account, I realize there are more stories to be told and I wish Eggers was able to tackle them all.
