My nine year old son had this book read to him in class. He was shocked when he realized that he already knew this story, despite having never seen or heard of this particular book! How is this so? Well, this story is a North American version of a British story first published in October of 1899 by Helen Bannerman, entitled Little Black Sambo. Pancakes for Dinner follows the same story as Little Black Sambo with minor changes, and is of course more politically correct than the original story written in 1899.
So, I'm not sure how clever Anne Isaccs and Mark Teague are, but the illustrations are much more aesthetically pleasing than the original story.
