I had to get it again. Extra stories and a new cover by Chip Kidd! What more does one want for Christmas!

My Abandonment by Peter Rock
My Abandonment

ldesigns, December 20, 2008

I looked over Peter Rock an excerpt from the novel My Abandonment in Tin House issue #35 Off The Grid. I didn't believe my eyes at first! I have a studio near this area in Portland and have been passing this father and daughter on the sidewalk for many years wondering what their story was. This book is on my post Christmas shortlist. The father and daughter were always nervous and looking about. Once I noticed how dirty the little girl was. She had black soot on her face and hands. She never looked frightened of the man she was with and never gave me a sign. I never bothered them. A few times on the bus I overheard the father talking about the bible with other riders. I think people were curious but never pried. The father and daughter would disappear from time to time, then they were on the local news as being kept at a farm close by. The father was told as being a vet, when the local news got to close to the farm with their helicopters, they fled. I have only seen them once since then in the summer of 2008.
